The Gospel

“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks God. All have turned away.”

Romans 3:10-12

There is a God. He made all things, and all things belong to Him. He is holy and righteous and has holy and righteous standards, or laws, by which He commands us to live. God’s law can be summed up in two commands: love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39). This creates a problem for humanity because all have disobeyed God’s laws, which the Bible calls sin (Romans 5:12). God has promised that He will judge all of mankind for their sins, and the consequence will be to suffer eternal death in hell (Romans 6:23).

BUT, because of God’s love for us, He sent His son, Jesus, to earth to take the punishment sinners deserves on Himself (John 3:16). Even though Jesus lived a perfect life, He was put to death on a cross, not because of anything He had done, but because of sinners. On the cross, God poured out His wrath upon Jesus and His death satisfied the demands of God’s justice. Through the death of Jesus, the payment for sinners was made (Romans 5:6-9). Jesus became our substitute (Isaiah 53:4-6).

“Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.”

1 Peter 3:18

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

John 3:36

Jesus didn’t stay dead. Three days later He rose to life and was seen by many people (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is proof that God is satisfied with Jesus as a perfect substitute. Jesus paid the penalty for sinners! And, if you turn from your sins and put your faith in Jesus’ perfect life, death, and resurrection, you will be saved from God’s judgment and receive eternal life (Mark 1:15). In salvation, God will also adopt you as one of His children (Romans 8:15)! God does not require anything from you to be saved. You simply need to acknowledge your sin, repent of it, and place your faith in Jesus, and God will be gracious to save you (Ephesians 2:8-9).
